Abstract

The treatment of acute migraine is nuanced, as specific therapy is largely dependent on individual factors such as patient preference, headache characteristics, associated symptoms, convenience, and cost. This chapter discusses the pharmacologic options and their associated evidence in the management of acute migraines. The risks, benefits, contraindications, and limitations of the various treatments are also discussed. The chapter concludes with a review of published practice guidelines for acute migraine treatment.
