Abstract

An acoustic-wave transmission measurement on a one-dimensional copper-epoxy composite is reported. The acoustic power transmitted through the composite was measured by using a swept frequency source from 5 kHz to 1 MHz and a broadband transducer. Measurement of transmitted power vs. frequency is compared with numerical calculations including attenuation, and good agreement is found for the location and the widths of the stopbands. The measured stopband attenuation ( approximately equals 13 dB/cm) is, however, substantially less than predicted. Implications of this result concerning the precision of the composite's periodicity are explored.
