Abstract
Objectives Provide a brief overview of the priority of surgical interventions for trauma. Provide an overview of the operative interventions for specific injuries resulting from abdominal trauma. Introduction “The abdomen rules” in trauma is a common phrase that may be overstated, but it is a useful philosophy when caring for traumatically injured patients. When dealing with traumatically injured patients it is important to remember this simple and very important concept. Although the abdomen may not be the most commonly injured area of the body or the area most commonly associated with fatal outcomes, the priority of abdominal trauma for both the surgical and the anesthesia teams is paramount. Identifying and addressing surgical issues of the abdomen promptly will allow the greatest opportunity for better outcomes. Because of the many different abdominal structures, the methods of treatment and approaches for surgical intervention vary. In most cases of abdominal injury, no operative intervention will be required This chapter will give a brief overview of surgical interventions for trauma, then it will focus on the operative interventions that may be required for abdominal injury involving different abdominal structures. Laparotomy While most abdominal trauma is managed nonoperatively, in general, the trauma laparotomy remains the mainstay of trauma operative intervention.
