This was an investigator-initiated trial funded by grants to and coordinated by the Division of Preventive Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. This study was performed at 2 academic centers: the Department of Community Health, University of California at Davis and the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology, and Clinical Research, Johns Hopkins University. Healthy adults 30 to 54 years of age were eligible for inclusion into the study if their average diastolic BP based on 9 readings was 85 to 94 mm Hg and their cholesterol level was <6.72 mmol/L (260 mg/L). Exclusion criteria included a history of congenital heart disease, stroke within the preceding 6 months, and cancer. Participants were required to discontinue all drugs known to affect BP before and throughout the trial. Willing and eligible subjects signed written informed consent approved by an institutional review board.

N2 - Although ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplements reduce blood pressure (BP), the typical doses cause untoward side effects. A novel fatty acid supplement was tested in a randomized trial of patients with high normal diastolic BP. The novel fatty acid supplement did not significantly reduce BP in patients with high normal diastolic blood pressure.
