Abstract

The Harvey M and Lyn P Meyerhoff Digestive Disease/IBD Center at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, USA, is one of the world's highly regarded 'virtual' tertiary inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) centres. This 'best-practice' US centre comprises a regionand nationwide, tertiary referral unit for patients with moderate-to-severe ulcerative colitis or other complex bowel disorders. Sharon Dudley-Brown and Aileen Fraser outline the work of the centre and consider it alongside one of the UK's leading IBD care providers, Bristol Royal Infirmary's Digestive Diseases Service. The roles of specialist nurses at each centre in providing patient-centred care to increase communication and concordance are discussed.
