Abstract

A model for foveal color thresholds built on two principle assumptions 1. (1) foveal receptor response thresholds are limited by quantum fluctuations and 2. (2) color appearance is the result of an opponent transformation of the receptor outputs, is presented in this paper. This model accounts for the foveal achromatic interval, threshold color-name fluctuations, and the wavelength dependence of the slopes of the color-detection functions.
